Report on 8th National Moot Court Competition

The 8th National Moot Court Competition, titled "Prudentia Conscientia Ingenium Occursus," took place at Bishop Cotton Women's Christian Law College from 7th to 9th July 2023. The competition focused on the topic of evergreening of Patents under Intellectual Property Rights.

The competition commenced with an inaugural ceremony on 7th July at 5.30pm. Honorable Mr. Justice Sunil Dutt Yadav, Judge of the High Court of Karnataka, was the Chief Guest, along with Mrs. Jyothi I.A.S, Commissioner of the Department of Industrial Training and Employment, Government of Karnataka, and Dr. Lavanya Mithran, Educational Convenor Karnataka Central Dioceses, Principal of Bishop Cotton Girls School, Member Board of Management, as Guests of Honor. The Principal In-charge, Prof. Dr. Indirani K.S., delivered the welcome address.

24 teams participated in the competition. The Preliminary Rounds began on the morning of 8th July, with two rounds taking place. 12 court halls presided by a division bench consisting of legal professionals and experts in the field. Top 8 teams advanced to the Quarter-Final Round, which commenced at 2.30pm. The Quarter-Final Round was adjudicated by advocates specializing in Intellectual Property Rights and esteemed academicians. 4 teams advanced to the Semi Final Round.

On 9th July, at 9.30 am the Semi-Final Round started, then 2 teams advanced to the Final Round. The Final Round started at 2pm was presided by a five-judge bench comprising of legal professionals and experts, Prof. Dr. Benarji Chakka, Dean, VIT, Amaravathi, Andhra Pradesh; Mr. Promod Nair, Sr. Advocate, High Court of Karnataka, Bengaluru; Mr. Raghavendra S,

Advocate, High Court of Karnataka; Ms. Deepa Menon, Senior Director, Global Head of Compliance and Data Privacy, Sonova, Switzerland and Mr. Shivakumar R, Head- IP and Tech Transfer Office, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms. The finalists showcased their skills and knowledge in the final battle.

The Valedictory ceremony started at 4.30 pm, Honorable Mr. Justice M. Nagaprasanna, Judge High Court of Karnataka was the Chief Guest. The judges in the final round were the Guests of Honour at the Valedictory ceremony. The winners of the competition were:

The Champions - Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, Udupi, received a cash prize of Rs 25,000 and a Trophy and also from Manupatra Information Solutions Pvt. Ltd an internship and Lawskill course.

Runners-Up The Central Law College, Salem, received a cash prize of Rs 15,000 and a Trophy and also from Manupatra Information Solutions Pvt. Ltd an internship and Lawskill course.

Best Counsel (Male) - Mr. Mohanaprashad S, The Central Law College, Salem, received a cash prize of Rs 5,000 and a Trophy and also from Manupatra Information Solutions Pvt. Ltd, Lawskill course.

Best Counsel (Female) - Ms. Maria Theresa, Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, Udupi, received a cash prize of Rs 5,000 and a Trophy and also from Manupatra Information Solutions Pvt. Ltd Lawskill course.

The Best Memorial - Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, Udupi, and the received a cash prize of Rs 3,000 and a Trophy and also from Manupatra Information Solutions Pvt. Ltd, Lawskill course.

The Best Promising Advocate - Ms. Khushboo Mishra, Government New Law College, Indore, received a cash prize of Rs 2,000 and a Trophy and also from Manupatra Information Solutions Pvt. Ltd, Lawskill course.

In recognition of their exceptional contributions, the Student Moot Court Club Coordinators – the President, Ms. Monisha Merlin Moras, and the Secretary, Ms. Advika Nayana Bhonsle, were offered internships by Manupatra Informationa Solutions Pvt. Ltd, Lawskill course.

The 8th National Moot Court Competition was a resounding success, providing a platform for students to showcase their legal knowledge and skills in the domain of intellectual property laws.
